I have been to his home airport at Salida often, it is an easy <30 minute Skywagon flight over Monarch Pass at 11,300 ft MSL. I'd certainly want some "cushion" before trying this in a gyro. FYI my Skywagon achieves FL280 on CO summer days without breaking a sweat.
