It has assisted in their birth, nursed them through ill health and will tend them on their deathbed. Formation of the NHS WebbRubery Hill Asylum opened in 1882 it was taken over by the War Office in March 1915. Rubery was renamed Birmingham War Hospital No 1. A Dr. Canning Suffern initially was appointed temporary Lieutenant Colonel working under the authority of a Military Medical Commander. Birmingham War Hospital No 1 was in use by the War Office until 1919.
