I suspect it would be an indication of a poorly made battery in the first place, combined with too cold a temperature. While I suspect it may be a real risk, it may also be rare. WebRechargeable batteries put in the fridge (post-recharge) will be more useful as some can lose up to 30% of their charge per month. Many rechargeable batteries will lose not just charge but capacity based on the temperature they're stored in, so putting them in the fridge while not in use can significantly extend their usefulness.
